History
Gainesville is the largest city in — and county seat of — Alachua County, Florida County, Florida, United States. The first classes were held at Buckman Hall in the fall of 1906. A site was selected at a location then considered about a mile west of town. Other attempts to replace this lost industry included phosphate mining, turpentine production and tung oil, each of which met with only moderate success. For several months following the Civil War, the 3rd United States Colored Troops were stationed in Gainesville, which encouraged freedmen to settle there.
