The name comes from the Dakota word for "where the waters meet." The population was 197 at the 2000 census.
The town was one of the first permanent settlements in the state of Minnesota, being founded around the same time as Fort Snelling. Mendota is a city in Dakota County, Minnesota County, Minnesota, United States. It also houses a small museum which used to be the Hypolite Du Puis house, the Henry Hastings Sibley house, the Jean-Baptiste Faribault house, and buildings associated with the American Fur Company, all dating from the 1830s. Other roads in the city are mainly small unimproved roads. The town houses the oldest church in Minnesota, Saint Peter's Church (Mendota, Minnesota) Peter's.
