History

The 'Tarkio Avalanche' newspaper was founded in 1884 . It was platted in 1880 and incorporated in 1881. The name "Tarkio" is from a Native American word meaning "place where walnuts grow". It was on the National Register of Historic Places, but the building was destroyed in a 1989 fire. By 1900, the United States Census Census shows 2,845 persons living in Tarkio .
