History

On September 9, 1821, the town was hit by what is known as the 1821 Norfolk and Long Island hurricane and Long Island Hurricane. Called New Amesbury, it was part of a line of settlements running between the Merrimack River and Connecticut River rivers intended to help defend Province of Massachusetts Bay against New France's predations. The Warner River and its tributaries provided water power for watermill which in 1832 included 12 sawmills, 6 gristmills, a paper mill and 2 clothing factories. But on September 3, 1774, it was incorporated as Warner, named after Jonathan Warner, a leading Portsmouth, New Hampshire citizen, namesake of the MacPheadris-Warner House House and relative of Governor John Wentworth (governor) Wentworth. The storm killed 4 people in Warner, seriously injured others and destroyed considerable property.
