Marietta was the starting location of the Great Locomotive Chase. During the Civil War a group of known as the Andrews Raiders hoped to end the Civil War early. The group stole the engine and fuel car when the train pulled into a station at Big Shanty. They planned to tear up the train tracks, destroy the switches, send fake telegraph messages, sever telegraph line and burn the covered bridges. While they accomplished much of this they were eventually caught.
